Can you be humble one day a year?

humble: not proud or haughty; not arrogant or assertive

Today is National Be Humble Day. A day for all of us to remember that we're not better than anyone else. A day to give credit to others.

You may think you rock; and maybe you do. But, chances are, you didn't get where you are today all by yourself. Others helped you by lending their support, money, connections, or resources.

We all have things we're good at and accomplishments we're proud of achieving. However, no one likes a braggart. Being humble is a trait that too few people possess.

For today, let us all remember to be humble. Don't be arrogant, don't try to get all the attention, don't feel that you've failed unless you've gotten the masses to recognize how great you are. Be humble. Be gracious. Then, just be.

  1. I am humbled every time I read your posts, Amber!  Reminds me what an inadequate writer I am!  :)  Thanks for this - I'm going to go sense the internet for humility now.....

  2. Oh, stop that. Being humble doesn't mean that you have to be hard on yourself, silly!

  3. Hi Amber, Very interesting - yesterday was Ash Wednesday, the point of which is I think to remind ourselves of our humble origins, and to keep that in mind as we live from day to day. I wonder if there's a connection between these two observances. I agree with you that there's not enough humility in the world today. We'd be so much better off if there were more!

  4. Hi Brad,

Interestingly, as I researched this topic, no one know who started Be Humble Day. Of course, it's speculated that that's intentional. Because the person was being humble, of course ;-)

  5. Amen to that girl. May we never forget who and what we are beyond all those "accolades" and compliments and all that other stuff.

Have a great one Amber. :)

  7. So good to hear from you, Marcus!

The more successful one becomes, the more challenging it can be to act humble. But, at the end of the day, it's all about being a good person and keeping things in perspective.

In other words, don't drink your own Kool-Aid ;-)

  9. I'll throw in a quote from Tony Hsieh (Co-Founder of Zappos):

"Don't be cocky. Don't be flashy. There's always someone better than you."

I've always been of the opinion that you don't need to brag. The work will speak for itself. If you're in a position where you're constantly bragging, it tells me that you talk a big game but don't/can't really deliver.

  10. Love the quote, Ricardo. So true!

Yeah, I hear you. The work speaks for itself. And, our reputations frequently precede us. No one ever said, "You've got to meet (fill in the name)! He has the biggest ego of anyone I know. He rocks!" ;-)
